WHAT does TOEFL stand for?

TOEFL™ is a standardized test which is stand for “Test Of English as a Foreign Language.”

  • TOEFL™ assesses the English proficiency of aspirants. It tests the ability to comprehend North American English. Most educational institutes in US and Canada (approximately 2400) ask applicants for their TOEFL™ Scores.
  • The TOEFL™ Internet-based Test (TOEFL™ iBT) tests the four language skills of aspirants namely; Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing.
3-5 passages from academic texts, approx. 700 words long with each passage containing 12-14 questions.
Time: 60-100 min
Questions: 36-70
Scoring Scale: 0-30

The Reading section evaluates the student’s ability to understand academic passages in English.

There are 4 – 5 passages with overall 36 – 56 questions on the same. In the test, the student is required to answer the questions related to a particular passage within 20 minutes.

4-6 lectures, each 3-5 min long, and containing 6 questions each.
2-3 Conversations, each 3 min long, with 5 questions each
Time: 60-90 min
Questions: 34-51
Duration: 0-30

The Listening section measures student’s ability to understand conversations and lectures in English. In all there are 6 – 9 conversations, talks and lectures. The questions are mainly about the primary idea and other supporting details. Some questions ask about a speaker’s purpose or attitude. All questions carry one point each. If some question carries more than one point, it will be mentioned specifically.

6 tasks of these, tasks assess opinion on a topic and 4 tasks are based on reading and listening tasks.
Time: 20 min
Duration: 0-4 points converted to 0-30 scoring scale

The Speaking section in the test assesses the student’s ability to speak about a variety of topics. For questions 1 and 2, response will be scored on ability to speak clearly and coherently about familiar topics. The first question is a personal experience question and the second is a personal preference question.
Question 3 and 4 are called integrated questions where students are required to integrate information given in the text with information given in a related audio clip.

 

For questions 5 and 6, the student is required to listen to part of a conversation or lecture. Then, the student would be asked a question about what he has heard. Question 5 talks about a problem with two possible solutions and then the student is required to state their choice of solution with reasons. Question 6, deals with information about any topic where students have to summarize the contents of the lecture in their own words. Preparation and response times are noted in this text. Test takers with disabilities may request time extensions.

2 tasks of these. 1 task asks for opinion on a topic and second task requires the student to write essay responses based on reading or listening tasks.

Duration: 0-5 points converted to 0-30 scoring scale

Writing section deals with the student’s ability to write in English in an academic scenario. There are 2 writing tasks. In the first task, the student has to read a passage about an academic topic and then listen to part of a lecture related to the passage. Then the student is expected to write a response to a question giving the relationship between the lecture and the read passage. The question does not ask for personal opinion.

 

In the second task, a student is assessed on their ability to write an essay in response to a question giving their opinion about a topic or issue. Essay would be scored on the quality of writing. Both tasks have stringent word count which has to be adhered to.
