Types of IELTS Exam

The Academic IELTS is slightly harder as it is meant for academic purposes. If you are planning to go to university or to college you are asked to answer Academic IELTS Exam. The General IELTS Exam is taken by those who are planning to immigrate and it is little easier than Academic IELTS exam.

Duration: 40 minutes
The listening test has 4 sections and which includes 40 questions each of one mark.

Listening is your first test. It will be for 40 minutes. The Listening Test has four sections. The difficulty of these sections is progressive that clearly means the first section is easiest whereas the fourth one is the most difficult one. You need to answer 40 questions while you listen to the audio. The audios are usually monologues and conversations by native speakers.

Score:  From 0 to 9 Band score
Duration: 60 minutes
There are three passages included in Reading and the total of 40 questions each of one mark.

Academic:
Academic Reading has four sections. There is one long passage in each section based upon which you need to answer 40 questions.

General:
General Reading has four sections, again with increasing level of difficulty. Each section has one or two texts on which you need to answer 40 questions. The passages are generally selected from books, newspapers, magazines, advertisements, notices, and company handbooks or guidelines.

Writing test includes 2 tasks:
Task 1 – Letter for General Training and Report Writing for Academic Training
Task 2 – Essay

The test format is like an interview. It is one on one interaction with three rounds.

This module of IELTS will assess the use of Spoken English. The test has 3 parts and it lasts for 11 to 14 minutes. The test is recorded.

Part 1- This part of the test last for 4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks you some questions about yourself. These questions are not that difficult. Usually they are about: where are you from, about you work, study, friends, neighbourhood, hobbies, food, sports, etc.

Part 2- This part is an individual speaking. In this the examiner will give you a topic to speak , on you will have to speak for 2 minutes. You have a minute to prepare. The examiner will not interrupt at all while you speak.

Part 3: This part is a discussion. In this round the examiner was given to you 5 to 6 questions based upon the topic which was given to you in part 2. Make sure you speak as much as you can.

What is the difference between General and Academic IELTS?

How many times in a year can we attempt IELTS?

The key to scoring in IELTS is improving English language on a whole. One can give the exam multiple times to clear and there is no restriction on the same; though it is best advised to take a decent break, prepare and then reappear to analyse the mistakes made earlier better.

What is the final marking system in IELTS?

There are four sections in the exam. This is inclusive of both Academic and General category. The scores are calculated between 0 and 9. You can score almost anything between this like even a 5.5. The overall band score is the average score of all the skills in all the four sections.
